Red Bull: Has Momentum on Their Side

The 2009 season saw the emergence of an evolving and maturing Red Bull Racing team. It was the season of assertion that a smaller guy can also take out the big boys.

2009 was not only Brawn’s year but it was also a big revelation of what the Red Bull Racing team is capable of. Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber’s tandem was the only thing that gave excitement last season as they were the only ones who posed a real threat and made last season not a railroad win for Brawn.
This year, the Vettel-Webber team up is coming back to continue snow-balling the momentum they got going from last year. Discounting the Red Bulls would be a big mistake because if there is one team on the grid that is dead serious in winning a constructor’s title, it is this team owned by the famous Austrian beverage company.

On the forefront of Red Bull’s campaign is the young but already a veteran on the track, last year’s second placer, Sebastian Vettel of Germany. At his age, nobody can deny he is a racing prodigy as he has already booked numerous Formula One records and he has already gone up the podium 9 times and garnered 125 points, 84 of which was from last season, this very early on his career.  His racing talents paired with a better car and more homogenized racing atmosphere, one can only surmised that this kid is the one to watch out for in 2010.

Another eager guy coming out of his shell is Australian Mark Webber, who was last year’s fourth placer.  Based from 2009, he is driver who has proven he can definitely drive bumper to bumper with the best of them and in fact won two 2 Grand Prix races last year earning himself 64.5 points.

Together, these two has matured experience-wise and has a really big chance of giving their employer the constructor’s title as they complement well each other. However, the Driver of the Year Award might be a bit difficult for either of them but no one is discounting them as they are considered as the dark horses who may pull up a fast one if the favorites don’t play their cards right.

For the 2010 season, the Red Bull drivers would be riding the RB6 car designed by famed F1 engineer Adrian Newey who engineered for the likes of Damon Hill, Alain Prost, Jacques Villenueve and Mika Hakkinen.  The RB6, an improved version of the RB5, the second placer last season sports a more imposing V-nose making it more aerodynamic and sleeker looking. Another modification from the reliable RB5 car is that the side pods are invariably higher complementing its shark-fin shaped engine cover.

Like most cars that will compete, the RB6 frame is made of a carbon-fiber and composite monocoque. It weighs 620 Kilos including the driver’s weight in consideration, making it at par with the Mercedes Silver Arrows and Ferrari’s F10 in terms of lightness. The RB6 will be powered by the Renault RS27-2010 which is designed to be a more efficient fuel consumer than the one used last year making it perfect for this year’s no refueling policy.
If the two drivers can muster up the same momentum they got from last year and analyze more on the mistakes they committed, team Red Bull is indeed a major contender.
